The inspection onboard the half-sunk ship just off the island of Giglio, has been a unique experience that has enriched us, both for the investigation-trial profile and from the human side. With this state of mind, half men and half lawyers, we climbed aboard the Concordia on January 23, 2014, and we have, for the first time with the exception of the rescuers, set foot inside the bridge of the ship.

The immediate feeling, crossing the decks and watching from outside the cabins and hallways, on one side perfectly intact while the other is stinky and covered of rotten seaweed, was to attend a snapshot of the shipwreck, everything has remained exactly as the passengers and crew hurriedly left it to escape from the sinking that was quickly flooding the internal bridges: the bags, personal items, mobile phones and radios still attached to battery chargers, maps and documents on the ground and even the buttons and switches on the dashboard on the bridge, in exactly the position they were touched one last time by the officers, exactly as in Pompeii; but the ship, in this case, also shows itself as a huge monument to human stupidity and absurdity.

However, we have been able to verify some really fundamental aspects, the panoramic elevators were stuck on different floors and not to the fourth deck, and, as a good amateur computer expert, I personally have found a computer inside the control panel, completely unrecognizable from the outside by marine fouling, which, together with two other PCs, has been removed by experts and hopefully will provide data of internal emails with Costa ground base or other data about the digital maintenance register of the ship, as we only have a backup of this data, provided by the same Costa Crociere. The feeling that this criminal trial is always missing a piece, and that Costa has not said everything, is still in the air, but we always find the time and fertile ground to debate with the media about the despicable attitude of the giant Cruise Company.
